Well, today is a pretty special day for hospital radio…

100 years ago today, hospital radio began in York. 

Just think about that for a moment — a whole century of volunteers giving their time to bring music, smiles, requests, dedications and a little bit of companionship to people spending time in hospital.

And here in Aberdeen, Grampian Hospital Radio has been part of that amazing story since 1981.

For 45 years, generations of GHR volunteers have sat behind those microphones, pressed the buttons, played the records, taken the requests and, most importantly, been there for our listeners.

Hospital radio isn’t just about playing music. It’s about that little connection with the outside world. A familiar voice. A favourite song. A birthday dedication. A message from home. Sometimes, it’s simply knowing that someone is thinking about you.

So today, we raise a virtual cuppa to the pioneers in York who started it all 100 years ago, to every hospital radio volunteer who has followed them, and to everyone who has helped keep Grampian Hospital Radio going since 1981.

45 years of GHR.

And hopefully many, many more to come.
